Why Your Home Is Losing Heat (And How to Fix It)
If your home feels colder than it should in the winter, or certain rooms never seem to stay warm, there’s a good chance the problem isn’t your furnace — it’s your attic. This is something we see all the time in Calgary homes. A lot of attics technically “have insulation,” but it’s not doing what people think it is. It’s often uneven, compressed, or just not deep enough to meet today’s standards. In Alberta, the recommended level is around R50, and many homes fall well short of that.
What ends up happening is simple — heat rises, escapes through the attic, and your home constantly tries to compensate for it.
One of the biggest issues we run into isn’t just insulation depth — it’s everything happening underneath it.
Air Leaks
Air leaks are a major problem. Warm air from your home finds its way into the attic through small openings around bathroom fans, light fixtures, plumbing stacks, and attic hatches. Once that warm air hits the cold attic space, it creates condensation. In the winter, this can turn into frost, and when it warms up, it melts — what we often call “attic rain.”
That’s where you start seeing moisture issues, and over time, it can affect both your insulation and the structure of your attic.
Uneven insulation.
We’ll open up an attic and see areas where insulation has been disturbed from previous work, or pushed back near the soffits from airflow. Even small gaps can make a big difference. It doesn’t matter how much insulation you have if it’s not covering properly — heat will always find the weak spots.
When it comes to fixing attic insulation, most homeowners ask the same question: Do I need to remove everything, or can I just add more? The answer depends on what’s already there. If the existing insulation is in decent shape and just a bit low, a top-up is often enough to bring it up to proper levels. But if the insulation is compacted, damaged, or there are signs of moisture or contamination, removal is usually the better route. It allows the attic floor to be properly sealed before new insulation goes in, which makes a big difference in performance.
In Calgary’s climate, this matters more than people realize. We deal with long, cold winters and big temperature swings. Without proper attic insulation, your home loses heat quickly in the winter and gains heat in the summer, making it harder to stay comfortable year-round.
If you’re noticing higher energy bills, cold spots, or just feel like your home isn’t performing the way it should, it’s worth taking a closer look at your attic. Most of the time, the issue isn’t obvious from inside the house — but once you see what’s happening up there, it makes complete sense.
